CARLETON, MAHONEY NAMED HOCKEY WRITERS' ALL-STARS

MEDFORD -- Senior left wing Drew Carleton (Shaker Heights, OH/University School) and junior defenseman Dan Mahoney (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury), leaders of a Tufts University hockey team that posted one of the best seasons in the program's history this winter, were named to the 2000 New England Hockey Writers Division III All-Star Team.

They and 10 other members of the team will be honored at the annual New England Hockey Writers' Association banquet, which will be held on Tuesday, April 11, at the Prince Restaurant on Route 1 in Saugus.

Carleton was named to the squad for the second straight year after leading the Jumbos with 28 goals and 41 points. Also an ECAC Northeast Division All-Star for the third straight year, Carleton led the league with six game-winning goals and also netted eight powerplay scores. The captain scored three goals with two assists to lead the Jumbos to a 7-4 win over Johnson & Wales in the first round of the Northeast Playoffs, the first post-season game hosted by the Jumbos since 1989. Carleton will graduate this May after scoring 84 goals with 64 assists for 148 points in 74 career games for third on the team's all-time goals list and fifth on the all-time points list.

"Drew is one of the most prolific players we've ever seen," said head coach Brian Murphy. "He was one of the most productive players on the ice almost every night. At the same time, he was a great team who was voted a two-year captain."

Mahoney anchored a defensive unit that allowed just 2.60 goals per game against league opponents and 3.65 per game overall. In addition, he was the team's top-scoring blue liner and sixth overall with five goals and 14 assists for 19 points. An ECAC Northeast Division All-Star, he scored four goals on the powerplay and was a Player of the Year candidate for his steady play both ways. One of just four non-seniors on the New England Hockey Writers' Team, and the only defenseman, he will be one of the league's top returning players next season.

"I think he was one of the five best players in the league this year," said Murphy, himself a former All-Star defenseman for the Jumbos. "He's strong. He handles the puck well. He shoots it well. He works hard in the off-season. He's everything you want a player to be."

The Jumbos finished 13-10-1 overall, including 9-3-1 in the ECAC Northeast for third place during the regular season. They earned their second straight playoff berth, and advanced to the semi-finals before losing in overtime at Fitchburg State, 4-3. That was the farthest the team had advanced in the post-season since 1988.
