BOSTON, Mass. -- Junior forward Jeramie Vaine scored two goals, including the game-winner at 16:25 of the third period, as Wentworth came back to defeat Tufts, 4-3, in an ECAC Northeast game at Matthews Arena.
Tufts, which has already secured its first home playoff game since the 1988-89 season, led 2-1 after two periods on goals by freshman Mike Carceo (Belmont, MA) at 9:50 of the first and junior Natan Obed (Goose Bay, NFLD) at 8:16 of the second. Vaine then tied the game at 2-2 with the first of three Leopard goals in the third period at 4:45. The Jumbos regained the lead, 3-2, just 28 seconds later on senior captain Drew Carleton's (Shaker Heights, OH) 20th goal of the season. Wentworth quickly tied the score again, 3-3, on Dave Zelasko's strike little more than a minute later at 6:34. Vaine's second of the period with 3:35 left in the third won it for Wentworth.
Sophomore Ian Kell (St. Paul, MN) stopped 20 shots for Tufts, while Wentworth's Jeff Reid made 29 saves. Tufts had a 32-24 advantage in shots.
The Jumbos finished their Northeast schedule with a 9-3-1 mark. They can finish no worse than fourth place in the league, which earns them a home playoff game on Saturday, February 26. It will be the first time the Jumbos have played in the post season on home ice since losing to Fitchburg State, 3-2, on March 1, 1989. The game will be played at Babson College starting at 7 pm, with Tufts' opponent yet to be determined.
Tufts has games at Division II's New Hampshire College on Saturday (Feb. 19) and Assumption on Tuesday (Feb. 22).
