Hockey team to vie for top NESCAC spots

The hockey team will face fifth-ranked UMass-Dartmouth Saturday night at Boston College’s Conte Forum at 8 p.m. The Jumbos, now 7-2 in the Division III East Coast Athletics Conference (ECAC) Northeast division, are currently ranked third in the league and are closing in on the top two ECAC contenders. The team trails first-seed Wentworth by three points and second-ranked Fitchburg State by only two.

With five games left in its regular season, three of which are ECAC bouts, the Jumbos need to secure several victories to clinch a top spot for the ECAC playoffs. They hope to start with a win in tomorrow night’s match-up. Last year, the squad finished its season with a 12-4-1 record before losing a heartbreaker in the first round of the playoffs, and it appears as though the team is going to far exceed its past success.

This weekend, the team will look for scoring opportunities from senior captain and top scorer Drew Carleton, senior assistant captain Scott Sullivan, who has scored a point in each of the past 13 games, and freshmen phenoms Mike Carceo and Rob LaQuaglia. On the defensive end, the team seeks the support of senior defenseman Pete Schieffelin, junior blueliner and assistant captain Dan Mahoney, and sophomore goalie Ian Kell, who last week was named ECAC Northeast Goaltender of the Week.

“We need to finish off this week with a big win against U-Mass Dartmouth,” senior captain Carleton said. “They’re of similar caliber to Fitchburg, but if we stick to our game and come out strong, we should do well.”
