CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Jeff DuRoss (Weymouth, MA) scored two goals and goalie Nick Gangemi (Tewksbury, MA) made 30 saves as visiting Fitchburg State College took a key ECAC Northeast Division game from Tufts University, 4-1, on Saturday night.

With the victory, the Falcons (12-4-3, 7-1-2) moved up to first place in the ECAC Northeast with 16 points. The Jumbos (9-5, 7-1) fell into third place, with Wentworth wedged in between the two. Tufts had a 31-23 edge in shots over Fitchburg, including 12-3 in the second period, but the tested Falcons took charge with opportunistic scoring and steady goaltending.

DuRoss opened the scoring with a powerplay goal at 6:34 of the first period, but the Jumbos answered with their only goal of the night by senior Scott Sullivan (Tewksbury, MA) at 12:48. DuRoss scored the eventual game-winner, his 14th of the year, at 17:16 of the first to give Fitchburg a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

Tufts dominated play for most of the second period, but Gangemi held the fort with 12 saves. Then early in the third, Fitchburg sophomore Jeff Brodeur (Townshend, MA) scored a back-breaker at 2:27. Tufts had opened the period with continued pressure, but it was Fitchburg that took a 3-1 lead on Brodeur's wrist shot past Jumbo sophomore goalie Ian Kell (St. Paul, MN). Falcon sophomore Dan Tsoutsouris (Danvers, MA) sealed the win with a rebound goal at 8:24.

Gangemi had 30 saves overall, while his counterpart Kell made 19 stops. The game was played at Boston College's Conte Forum and featured just seven minor penalties.
