BOSTON -- Freshman Rob LaQuaglia (Medford, MA) scored two straight goals to break open a close game and propel the Tufts University Jumbos to a 6-2 victory over the Stonehill College Chieftains in ECAC college hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

With Tufts holding a slim 3-2 lead, LaQuaglia scored on a breakaway at 6:57 of the second and then added another at 1:23 of the third to give the Jumbos a 5-2 advantage. From there, sophomore goalkeeper Ian Kell (St. Paul, MN) and the Tufts defense clamped down during four Stonehill powerplays in the third period to earn the team's second straight victory and push them over .500 (3-2).

Stonehill (4-4-1) had come back from an early 2-0 deficit with a late goal in the first and an early one in the second. Chieftains' leading scorer Adam Hubler (East Orleans, MA) cut the deficit to 2-1 with his eighth of the year on the powerplay with only 13 seconds left in the first period. Then 41 seconds into the second, senior tri-captain Mike Close (Canton, MA) tied the game at 2-2 with his fifth. With only 54 seconds elapsed between the goals, the Chieftains were back in the game quickly.

Tufts senior Scott Sullivan (Tewksbury, MA) answered almost as quickly with Tufts' third powerplay goal at 2:33, then LaQuaglia's pair later stretched the margin to three. Powerplay goals by junior Dan Mahoney (Tewksbury, MA) and senior captain Drew Carleton (Shaker Heights, OH) had given the Jumbos a 2-0 lead 15 minutes into the game. Junior Scott Hayes (Medfield, MA) had the final Tufts tally.

Kell finished with 24 saves, while Stonehill freshman Phil Graves (Pepperell, MA) had 26 until he was replaced by sophomore Greg Stack (West Roxbury, MA) late in the game.
