CAMBRIDGE – Senior Chris Pisani (Marlboro, NJ) was in the right place at the right time to give visiting Salve Regina University a stunning 6-5 victory in overtime against the Tufts University Jumbos in the first round of the ECAC Northeast Division hockey playoffs on Sunday afternoon. A shot by Salve freshman Ryan Park (Dublin, OH) deflected off a Tufts defender, then deflected off Pisani into the net for the winning goal.

Salve Regina (11-14) entered the playoffs as the eighth and final seed. Tufts (17-6-1) was the top seed that had beat the Seahawks twice during the regular season. With the win, Salve advanced to the semi-finals against Wentworth (a 7-2 winner over Fitchburg State in a Saturday quarter-final) on Wednesday (Feb. 28).

Salve Regina put itself in a position to win behind stellar goaltending from sophomore Chris Burns (Quincy, MA) and by scoring three third-period goals. Burns faced 65 shots and finished with 60 saves, including an incredible 29 in the second period. He stopped a break-away by Jumbo sophomore Mike Carceo (Belmont, MA) at 6:04 of the second period, then stopped junior Jason Boudrow (Somerville, MA) all alone out front with 25 seconds left in the third period.

Trailing 3-1 after one period and 4-2 early in the third, the Seahawks got goals from sophomore Peter Marfione (Reading, MA), sophomore Jason Henney (Norfolk, MA) and senior co-captain Ed Fletcher (Milton, MA) within a six-minute span to lead 5-4 at 8:07 of the third period. The Jumbos quickly tied the score at 5-5 on Boudrow’s second goal of the game at 8:43. Despite a 64-30 Tufts advantage in shots through three periods, the game went to OT where Salve won it after just 1:32 of play.

The Jumbos looked to be in control of the game in the first period, out-shooting the Seahawks, 17-5, and getting goals from senior tri-captain Natan Obed (Goose Bay, NFLD), senior Justin Picone (Ellington, CT) and Boudrow. Burns stood on his head in the second period, saving all 29 shots the Jumbos put on him while a goal by sophomore Bill Baker (Milton, MA) made the score 3-2 Tufts after two. Jumbo sophomore Rob LaQuaglia (Medford, MA) scored what seemed to be a huge goal for Tufts just 22 seconds into the third period for a 4-2 lead.
