CHESTNUT HILL – Senior tri-captain Dan Mahoney (Tewksbury, MA) set up sophomore Mike Carceo (Belmont, MA) for the game-winning goal 2:35 into overtime as the host Tufts Jumbos edged the Plymouth State Panthers in ECAC Northeast Division college hockey action on Monday night.

Trailing 2-0 after the first period, Plymouth fought back and tied the game at 3-3 on junior Chris Tortorella’s (Larchmont, NY) wrist shot with 1:56 remaining in the third period. Plymouth junior Aaron Fifield (Northfield Falls, VT) was then whistled off the ice for a five-minute major slashing penalty less than a minute later. Tufts could not capitalize during regulation, but Mahoney beautifully set up Carceo halfway into OT for the winner.

Jumbo powerplay goals by sophomores Rob LaQuaglia (Medford, MA) and Chris Martin (Arlington, MA) were scored 17 seconds apart late in the first period to give Tufts the 2-0 lead. Plymouth freshman Garrett Dionne (Clarence Center, NY) cut the margin in half with the first of his two goals at 11:33 of the second. Junior Jason Boudrow (Somerville, MA) restored the two-goal bulge for Tufts with his 28th goal of the season at 14:40 of the middle stanza.

Plymouth played a determined third, pulling within 3-2 on Dionne’s second tally early in the third. They tied the game late, but could not pull off the upset as Tufts capitalized with their third powerplay goal of the game.

Tufts, fighting for first place during the last week of the regular season, avoided a big setback that would have come with a loss or tie. They next play Wentworth in a first-place showdown at the Valley Forum in Lawrence on Thursday night.
