NEW BEDFORD -- The Tufts University hockey team built a 4-0 lead in the second period, then held on to post a 4-3 victory at UMass-Dartmouth in ECAC Northeast Division hockey action on Saturday night. The win was the first ever for the Jumbos over the Corsairs, breaking a string of 16 winless games (0-14-2) in the series.

Tufts quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead on sophomore defenseman Chris Martin's (Arlington, MA) goal just 1:34 into the game. They pushed the lead to 2-0 on a big goal with just 1:40 left in the first by junior Jason Boudrow (Somerville, MA). Senior Natan Obed (Goose Bay, NFLD) assisted on both goals.

The Jumbos struck quickly again in the second, with sophomore Rob LaQuaglia (Medford, MA) netting his ninth of the year at 1:11. He then helped set up classmate Mike Carceo (Belmont, MA) at 10:18 for a 4-0 Tufts advantage. The Jumbos were rolling.

Or so it seemed. UMD's Chris Dussault cut the lead to 4-1 at the 13:41 mark of the second period. He scored again unassisted just 3:41 into the third, then Chris Anderton scored at 10:04 and it was 4-3 with half a period to play. The Jumbos held on, with freshman Ben Crapser (Paxton, MA) making 10 of his 27 saves in the third period.

Tufts (15-5 overall, 13-1 ECAC Northeast) jumped into a tie for first place with the win. Their 26 points is the same as Wentworth and Johnson & Wales. The Jumbos hold their own destiny to finish first for the regular season. Following Monday's game against Plymouth State, Tufts hosts Wentworth at the Valley Forum in Lawrence on Thursday night. They close the regular season against New Hampshire College at MIT on Saturday.
