FITCHBURG -- Senior defenseman Justin Picone (Ellington, CT) scored 31 seconds into the game and the Tufts hockey team kept rolling right on to a 7-0 victory at Fitchburg State College in ECAC Northeast Division action on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman goalie Ben Crapser (Paxton, MA) made 28 saves to record the first shutout of his college career. Six other Jumbos joined Picone in the goal-scoring column as Tufts won easily without a point from junior Jason Boudrow (Somerville, MA), the leading scorer in the country. The Jumbos remain in third place in the conference.

Sophomore Mike Carceo (Belmont, MA) scored his 16th goal of the season at 3:11 of the first period for an early 2-0 lead that stood throughout the stanza, with Crapser making 10 stops. Senior tri-captains Dan Mahoney (Tewksbury, MA) and Scott Hayes (Medfield, MA) scored goals exactly one minute apart in the middle of the second for a 4-0 margin. Freshman Pat Byrne (Burlington, MA) added another less than two minutes later, and the Tufts lead was a big 5-0. With Crapser turning aside everything Fitchburg sent his way (12 saves in the second), the game turned ugly.

Fights, game disqualifications and misconducts - most against Fitchburg - polluted the late second and entire third period. The Jumbos managed to add two more goals in the third, by sophomore Rob LaQuaglia (Medford, MA) and the first career goal by junior Rob Greene (Littleton, CO).

The Jumbos improved to 13-4 overall, matching last season's victory total. They play their last non-league game of the season on Tuesday night at Connecticut College, then enter the fight for first place in the Northeast over the remaining 10 days of the regular season.
