BOSTON – Host UMass-Boston broke a 2-2 tie after one period with three goals in the second period on their way to a 5-2 victory over visiting Tufts in hockey action between Greater Boston foes on Tuesday night.

UMass-Boston entered the game with just two wins, but is a much improved team in the second semester after some talented additions to the club during the winter break. They jumped to a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals scored within 23 seconds of each other in the middle of the first period. Tufts responded with its only two goals of the game to tie it, freshman Pat Byrne's (Burlington, MA) 14th and junior Jason Boudrow's (Somerville, MA) 22nd.

Mike Bertoni had a goal and an assist during the Beacons' three unanswered goals in the second. They had a 3-2 lead for most of the second, then scored twice within 33 seconds late in the period to take a more commanding 5-2 lead. Beacon goalie Jason Gardner played a key part in the crucial second period with 15 of his 31 total saves.

Boudrow, the nation's leading scorer, had a goal and an assist for the Jumbos and is now 22-30-52 in 15 games. Freshman Ben Crapser (Paxton, MA) made 27 saves in the Tufts net.

Tufts gets back into ECAC Northeast play on Thursday night versus Curry at the Valley Forum in Lawrence.
