LAWRENCE – Freshman Pat Byrne (Burlington, MA) and sophomore Rob LaQuaglia (Medford, MA) scored goals 29 seconds apart early in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and send Tufts University on to a 6-2 victory over Salve Regina University in ECAC Northeast Division hockey action on Wednesday night.

A shorthanded goal by junior Jason Boudrow (Somerville, MA), his second goal of the game, gave Tufts a 2-1 lead at 8:58 of the second period. That’s how the period ended, but visiting Salve Regina tied it quickly in the third when sophomore Matt Hillberg (Westwood, MA) scored on the powerplay at 1:54. Tufts then scored the next four goals, including the two quickies by Byrne at 6:35 and LaQuaglia at 7:04.

The Jumbos remained undefeated at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the ECAC Northeast. Tufts, which picked up votes in the uscollegehockey.com national poll for the first time ever this week, is off to its best start since 1987. Salve lost for the first time in three games, dropping to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Boudrow had a hat trick for the Jumbos, adding a powerplay goal with 50 seconds left in the third period. The ECAC Northeast leading scorer also had the key assist on Byrne’s eventual game-winner. Linemate Natan Obed (Goose Bay, NFLD) had three assists on the night. Freshman goalie Ben Crapser (Paxton, MA) made 18 saves to keep his record perfect.

Salve sophomore goalie Chris Burns (Quincy, MA) was much busier at the other end, making 36 saves in a losing effort. Freshman Frank Mingone (White Plains, NY) had the first Salve goal, which tied the game at 1-1 at 7:17 of the first period.
